I’ve always loved Mexican food. Or, at least, what I always thought of as Mexican food: fajitas, tacos, burritos; little bundles of vaguey spiced meat, drowning in sauce and enough saturated fat to make your arteries go clang from just looking at it. I visited San Diego last year and loved the food we found […]

The trend for upmarket American BBQ is showing no sign of stopping, which suits me just fine. It’s delicious, meaty and generally inexpensive, although certainly not the choice for anyone even remotely health-conscious. Unfortunately, it can be hard to pick out the decent restaurants from London’s ever-sprawling meatscape, where lots of places concentrate more on […]
I am a horrible morning person. I am actually writing this from the edge of my bed at the crack of dawn just so I could really capture things in medias res, and the upshot is that I am deeply regretting taking up the #EarlyBirdChallenge and making a 7am reservation at Duck and Waffle, London’s highest […]
What if I told you there was something going on in East London sort of like the World Cup, but not shit? There’s booze involved, certainly, but patties instead of players, buns instead of balls and, er, gherkins instead of goals? And a democratic vote at the end in which everyone chooses the winner together? And […]
“This,” I announced to the Robert, the head chef of Clockjack Oven, Soho, after two glasses of wine and a faceful of its signature rotisserie chicken, “is the wettest bird I’ve ever had.”

Turns out it can be done, though, even though the menu – designed by Michelin starred chef, Yasuji Morisumi – reads like a schizophrenic mash-up of steaks, burgers, pasta, curry and noodles.
“Have you guys decided what you want to order yet?” asked the waiter. “Yes,” I said. “Steak please.” And laughed myself senseless. The waiter, who must have heard the joke about 50,000 times before, made a half-hearted attempt at a guffaw before asking how I’d like it cooked.
Shoryu Ramen on Kingly Street is so new Google Maps hasn’t even got it yet, which is how I accidentally ended up at their branch on Regent Street. Luckily, the noodly micro-chain’s latest addition was just up the road, so by the time I’d ridden my boneshaker up Regent Street I’d only kept my dinner […]
So while everyone genuinely does love a lie-in and all-day eggs, people who bang on about how much they simply love brunch always come across as…you know. Tossers. That said, if you’re going to get on board with the most pretentious meal of the day, you may as well do it right. Islington’s Upper Street is to brunch […]
