It’s a tough old world out there, for pop-ups. New ones, er, pop up in London all the time, but only the strongest survive. The ones that do get to keep coming back, and – if they’re very lucky – take root somewhere. Ceru is a pop-up mid-way through its metamorphosis; after a successful stint […]

Choosing a restaurant to go with my dad is always a nightmare. He automatically vetoes at least 80% of London restaurants in one fell swoop by refusing to eat anything processed or go anywhere pretentious, which is, apparently, any restaurant serving jus or employing ostentatiously French wait staff. Fortunately, I found the perfect place in Flesh & […]

It was James 1’s birthday this week, and in our flat we always go out for a posh meal to celebrate our ever-quickening slide into middle age. (I’m actually gathering a terrifying momentum; I bought a soup-maker the other day and have already blocked out all of Sunday to experiment. Curious London, indeed.)

“Good afternoon,” said the voice, as I picked up the phone on Friday. “I’m just calling to confirm your reservation tonight.” “Yes, we’re still on for nine. Two of us.” “Very good. The password is ‘coconut’.” And so began our adventure into London’s weirdest and most wonderful watering hole.

There’s something slightly depressing about the phrase ‘English tapas’. For me, the idea of ‘tapas’ conjures up visions of glorious Mediterranean sunsets, al fresco dining and big jugs of ruby red sangria. (Yes, yes, I have the imagination of a lobotomised tomato. So sue me.) Anything associated with our own little isle, on the other hand, […]

The trend for upmarket American BBQ is showing no sign of stopping, which suits me just fine. It’s delicious, meaty and generally inexpensive, although certainly not the choice for anyone even remotely health-conscious. Unfortunately, it can be hard to pick out the decent restaurants from London’s ever-sprawling meatscape, where lots of places concentrate more on […]
So while everyone genuinely does love a lie-in and all-day eggs, people who bang on about how much they simply love brunch always come across as…you know. Tossers. That said, if you’re going to get on board with the most pretentious meal of the day, you may as well do it right. Islington’s Upper Street is to brunch […]

L’ETO Caffé is a small London-based chain of fancy bruncheries that seems intent on replicating the patisseries across the Channel: the food is delicious, the pastries are beautiful, and the staff are among some of the rudest and least attentive I’ve ever encountered.
